THEATRE NEWS FOR SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA

THE CURRAN CELEBRATES STEVE MARTIN & EDIE BRICKELL’S TONY AWARD-NOMINATED MUSICAL “BRIGHT STAR” FEATURING CARMEN CUSACKSPECIAL HOLIDAY ENGAGEMENT OF “BRIGHT STAR” WILL PLAY THE CURRANNOVEMBER 28 – DECEMBER 17, 2017

– Ahead of the highly anticipated San Francisco (November 2017) premiere of the Tony® Award-nominated, new musical BRIGHT STAR, from Grammy® and Emmy® winner Steve Martin and Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Edie Brickell, the Curran has released two music videos of the show’s opening number, “If You Knew My Story,” captured by filmmaker Ezra Hurwitz. Both videos feature BRIGHT STAR’s original leading lady, Carmen Cusack, who is set to revive her career-defining performance as Alice Murphy (which earned her universal raves and a 2016 Tony Award nomination) for the San Francisco engagement.  The first video has Cusack and her cast mates in a rehearsal room setting, as she transforms from herself into her character.

The second video features an array of Bay Area locals joining in – a nod to the notion that everyone has a story worth sharing and a launch of Curran’s Bay Area-wide “If You Knew My Story” campaign. The Curran partnered with Ruth Asawa School of the Arts, Community Music Center, the SFFD and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital – whose patients created an “If You Knew My Story” art exhibit, to be featured in Neiman Marcus Union Square windows beginning November 3rd. Both videos, released today, can be accessed at SFCURRAN.com.

This is the third music video the Curran has created this year, in celebration of the Bay Area and the cast of the musicals performing at the Curran. The first was “Ring of Keys” from FUN HOME and the second was “Amazing Grace” as performed by TAYLOR MAC. Both videos can be accessed here:

BRIGHT STAR will begin performances at the Curran on Tuesday, November 28, 2017, with an official opening night of Wednesday, November 29, 2017, and play through Sunday, December 17, 2017.  Tickets for BRIGHT STAR are available at SFCURRAN.com/bright-star.

Inspired by a true event, the wholly original new musical BRIGHT STAR tells a sweeping tale of love and redemption set against the rich backdrop of the American South in the 1920s and 40s. When successful literary editor Alice Murphy meets an ambitious young soldier just home from World War II, their connection inspires Alice to confront her past. Together they discover a stunning secret with the power to transform their lives.

THE CAST OF SAN FRANCISCO PLAYHOUSE “A CHRISTMAS STORY—THE MUSICAL”

— San Francisco Playhouse (Artistic Director Bill English; Producing Director Susi Damilano) announced casting for the second show of its 2017-18 Mainstage Season—A Christmas Story: The Musical. With music and lyrics by Tony- and Oscar-winning duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (Dear Evan Hansen, La La Land) and a book by Joseph Robinette, A Christmas Story is based on the classic 1983 film of the same name. Susi Damilano will direct.

Nine-year-old Ralphie Parker wants nothing more for Christmas than an official Red Ryder Carbine-Action 200-Shot Range Model Air Rifle. But first, he’ll have to navigate past a maniacal department store Santa, an infamous leg lamp, a triple-dog-dare to lick a frozen flagpole, and much more. Nominated for three Tony Awards in 2013, A Christmas Story is a classic and heartfelt holiday tale backed by a magnificent score.

“There’s a reason A Christmas Story is one of the most beloved holiday tales of our time,” said Producing Director Susi Damilano. “This musical captures all of the joy and wonder of the original film, and enhances it with an amazing score by two of the most gifted composers of their generation.” Pasek and Paul won Tony Awards for Best Musical and Best Original Score for Dear Evan Hansen in 2017, and composed the lyrics for the film La La Land, winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

The cast of A Christmas Story: The Musical will feature Jonah Broscow*, Will Marchetti*, Ryan Drummond*, Abby Haug*, Jake Miller, Kavan Bhatia, David Rukin, Mario Herrera, Jack Barrett, Leo Sens, Matilda Holtz, Sammy Vernick, Panita Serizawa, Chloe Dalzell, Mira Shah, Gwen Herndon, Charlotte Ying Levy, Katrina Lauren McGraw, Ken Brill, Kathryn Han*, Alex Hsu*, Sophia LaPaglia, and Ozlo Ransom Mitchell.

New Partnership – Los Altos Stage Company  and Los Altos Youth Theatre

Los Altos Stage Company (LASC) and The City of Los Altos Recreation & Community Services Department are pleased to announce a new partnership wherein LASC will manage the City’s longstanding drama program for local children and teens, the Los Altos Youth Theatre (LAYT). Beginning in 2018, LASC will organize and produce three LAYT shows each year, starting in March with the stage adaptation of the classic children’s fantasy adventure, The Phantom Tollbooth (auditions will take place in early January; email jillian@losaltosstage.org for more information).

Jillian Toby-Cummings, LASC’s Education Director, will lead this new partnership as Director for LAYT. Jillian has a storied history with the program, beginning at age 8, when she debuted in an LAYT production of The Wizard of Oz. After graduating high school, Jillian went on to direct and choreograph dozens of LAYT shows. Jillian’s mother, Laura Toby, was the production manager and later Co-Artistic Director for LAYT for 12 years. She and Jillian worked alongside each other on many productions during that time. Most recently, Jillian directed LAYT’s production of Snow White and the Prince and the joint LASC/LAYT summer musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Working closely with Recreation & Community Services, Los Altos Stage Company will continue the long LAYT tradition of providing high quality play production opportunities for local families. We are all thrilled to be a part of this new joint venture, and with Jillian at the helm, we will work hard to meet and hopefully exceed the expectations of the children and families that make up the LAYT community.

Los Altos Stage Company and Recreation & Community Services will host a Meet & Greet on Tuesday, November 14 from 5:30pm – 6:30pm at the Bus Barn Theater for any families interested in getting to know Jillian or getting additional information regarding this new partnership.
