Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town” at NTC is a Pulitzer Prize Winning Drama

Novato Theater Company’s production of Our Town is the 1938 winner of a Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Though the script is unsettling and dark, Director Michael Barr has a wonderful cast; such as, Christine Macomber, outstanding in the lead as the moderator/stage manager who keeps the audience informed of the ordinary day-to-day lives of two families over several years between 1901 and 1915 in the imaginary town of Grover’s Corner, New Hampshire. If it were not for the strong cast and fine directing of the script intricacies, it would be difficult to hold the interest of the audience.

From wedding to birth to death (and beyond), this is a play about appreciating the gifts of life’s simple pleasures and coming to grips with its complications.

Supporting roles carried the theme — without whom there would be no story to share, and without consistently strong voice projection, no understanding of their emersion into the ordinary affairs of the townspeople. These cast members include John Simpson (Dr. Gibbs); Carl Robinett (Joe Crowell and Si Crowell); Thomas Peterson (Howie Newsome and Sam Craig); Jennifer Reimer (Mrs. Gibbs).

The excellent period-costume designs were created by Janice Deneau and Mary Weinberg. Though the set was minimalist, the Scenic Design and Buildout was nevertheless superbly crafted by Michael Walraven. Lighting Designer was Frank Sarubbi with Lighting Crew Izzy Gold, Frankie Sarubbi, and Jere Torkelsen. Sound Design by Simon Eves of Sound Logic, was excellent in this production; however, be sure to take advantage of the excellent headsets if you normally have difficulty hearing stage presentations.
