Arabian Shakespeare Festival (ASF) closes an era for their productions at the intimate Royce Gallery this fall with their end-of-summer comedy, “Midsummer”. And in true ASF form, the take will be aslant, but not askew. Six actors assume all roles, with genders reversed and assignments multiplied. As in last year’s “Twelfth Night, the female version,” we have seen what this creative company can do with untraditional casting and creative editing. And our world today seems ripe for topsy-turvy casting considering the antics of many of our political figures!

Previewing Nov 7, the themes for this production were inspired by our current cultural upheaval with mores and manners. In addition, recognizing the mission of bridging Arab and American cultures through familiar works such as “Midsummer Night’s Dream,” this production will emphasize some of its more secondary plot and themes. Such occurred in a production of this play at University of Al Ain in United Arab Emirates with an all female class.

Shakespeare’s plays have found a unique venue in the intimate Royce Gallery where constrictions of space have served to foster imaginative sets for “Macbeth”, “Hamlet”, “Twelfth Night” and others. ASF plans to take us into the Fairies’ world in “Midsummer,” with a production to see Shakespeare’s world through those creatures magical eyes.
