Caissie Levy
Feinstein’s at the Nikko, San Francisco, CA, November 17, 2017

Canadian born stage actress and singer Caissie Levy made her West Coast cabaret debut at Feinstein’s just prior to her originating the starring role as Esla in Disney’s musical adaptation of its smash hit Frozen. For Levy, winning this role has been a continuation of an abundance of riches. They say when it rains it pours; Levy had to turn down the plum role of replacing Sarah Bareilles in Waitress for a chance to originate a possible Broadway role.

For her Feinstein debut, Levy effortlessly breezed through a selection of tunes from shows she had the great luck of appearing in since her debut as Maureen in Rent. From that show Levy performed “Take Me or Leave Me” (Jonathan Larsen) her characters breakup up song, which fits in well with Levy’s aggressive, brassy vocal style. A nice mashup of “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Misérables and “I’m Not That Girl” from Wicked had just enough minor tweaks to be uniquely Levy.

From the short-lived musical “Ghost”, based on the hit 1990 romantic drama film of the same name, Levy sang the poignant “With You” and the optimistic “Nobody Stops Another Day” (Dave Stewart/Glenn Ballard), two set highlights. She brought her husband Dave Reiser to the stage to accompany her on his original tune “Out of the Blue” written for his musical Any Other Way. Levy was accompanied by pianist/arranger Justin Mendoza who knows how to make Levy’s voice shine. From Waitress, Levy sang “Everything Changes”, a song she had playing the very moment her son was born after a difficult pregnancy.

With a big Broadway voice, Levy has tone similar to Carole King and chose to close her show with “I Feel the Earth Move” and “Natural Woman”. Levy can certainly rely on he musical history for many shows to come, but I think she’s got much more in her to offer, especially with talented husband Reiser in her camp.
