Just My Type – The Musical
RAW At RVP
Will Also be Just *Your* Type
Emmy Award Winning Musical Director, Composer and Lyricist, Rita Abrams, with Co-Directors Michael Cohen and Michael Sally, also one of the 2 playwrights and superb actors – the other being Playwright Charlotte Jacobs — giving their best — thoroughly enthralled a packed house at this Ross Alternative Works presentation at the Ross Valley Players Barn April 22nd Matinee. Cheers and kudos to this wonderful cast, composer and directors.
Michael Sally and Charlotte Jacobs adroitly portrayed 5 different personality types each while writing a practical book together about love and marriage issues as seen through the Myers-Briggs personality indicators – learning when to lead and when to follow. This team was so excellent as the couple writing the book, we could easily assume they were married to each other!
The outstanding Musicians included Rita Abrams, Piano; Jack Prendergast, Band Lead and Synthesizer; Kurt Huget, Guitar; Jeff Sherman, Bass; and Christopher Beller, Drums. While all the music was excellent, Act 1 Type Talking between Kate and Ben was delightful give and take. Deli-lemma, as sung by Arlene and Sheldon had some great wailing! Isn’t it Great, sung by Kate and Ben, was hilarious. I can’t say enough about the superb music, and it’s all available on CD for sale at the show.
The show-stopper was Charlotte Jacobs in the 2nd Act, singing and dancing as Wilma Dean to Way More Woman. Geoff Brown’s choreography made perfect use of the dancing talents of Jacobs and Sally. Tina Johnson’s Lighting Design was perfect (especially when the generator went out). Billie Cox Sound Effects were precise and notable. The screen projection by François Lemaitre at the beginning was useful.
The concept of the script was cleverly executed, even though the set was cluttered with tables, chairs, make-shift sofa, and the band; and, without costume changes, following the various character changes got confusing. At one point the bandleader upstaged Michael Sally by standing in the middle of Sally’s performance, but otherwise, the script, music, singing, acting, and choreography carried the day. (The stage would have been less cluttered if the band had been situated at the back of the house instead of upper center stage.)
The “Talk Back” session after the show was informative and enjoyable. You’ll also have an opportunity to participate in this after the final matinee performance on April 29th.
