Scott & Zelda: The Beautiful Fools Entrances RVP-RAW Audiences

Even if you’re not into 1920s-30s music, chances are great that you’ve enjoyed the writings of F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940). Written by Sausalito playwright Lance S. Belville, the current production on the Ross Valley Players’ stage, as directed by Lynn Lohr, tells us something of Fitzgerald’s private life (brilliantly portrayed by Frankie Stornaiuolo) with the love of his life, Zelda Sayre (beautifully portrayed by Emily Dwyer).

Director Lynn Lohr inspired the best possible performances from her stellar cast as well as bringing together all aspects of the entire production for audience enjoyment.

The charismatic cast kept the audience transfixed by the romance and the inside look at all facets of the Fitzgerald fame and fortune through their young daughter, Scottie (delightfully portrayed by young talent Charlotte Curtin, who also performed as “Judge #2”), and his agents and various friends.  Fitzgerald friend Ernest Hemingway was wonderfully portrayed by Izaak Heath (who doubled as friend Peyton Mathis). Editor Max Perkins was skillfully performed by Ron Talbot, who also convincingly portrayed friend Kallie Kalman and Dr. Rennie.  Agent Harold Ober was skillfully performed by Peter Warden – as well as the roles of Jozan and a reporter. His portrayal of Groucho Marx was superb. Jannely Calmell was unrecognizable and believable in all three of her roles as Nora, Grace, and the woman in the hotel room. She was also Choreographer for the production. Marissa Ellison was excellent as gossip columnist Sheilah Graham; she also carried the roles of friend Xandra Kalman and “Judge #1,” very well.

The minimalist set was perfectly designed and constructed by Michael Walraven, Michael R. Cohen, and Bob Gudmundsson for keeping the focus on the action. The wonderfully artistic black-background, back curtain was cleverly created by Scenic Artist Stephanie Paula, and the beautiful costumes, along with props were all designed by Dhyanis Carniglia. Stage Manager Shirley Wen with Assistant Stage Manager Lyra Lambert cleverly designed quick scene changes with the least distraction. The effervescent and welcoming Tinka Ross was Co-Production Manager with Michael R. Cohen.

Lighting was perfect throughout, as designed by Tina Johnson, and the Sound Design by Bruce Vieira was excellent. Claire Champommier did wonders at the Light/Sound Board.
