Imagine being transported to England’s Christmastime in the 1800s, with all the joy and romance of the period. MTC’s production (and World Premiere) of The Wickhams Christmas at Pemberley by Playwrights Lauren Gunderson and Margot Melcon will take you there – with easily-understood-dialect dialogue (thanks to the wonderful work of Dialect Coach Jessica Berman); perfect performances, period music, costuming, lighting, sound, and set design.
Under the superb collaborative efforts of Artistic Director Jasson Menadakis, Creative Director Megan Sandberg-Zakia and Assistant Olivia Dillon, and Production Director(s) Sara Huddleston and Rachel Hurado, this production is neither to be missed nor soon to be forgotten. Its run has been extended through December 16, 2018.
Each scene and each interaction demonstrates finely-tuned acting skills with no weak links, whether the tone was serious or hilarious: (alphabetically) stern but kind Head of Servants, Mrs. Reynolds (Jennie Brick); charming young Manservant Brian (August Browning); aristocratic Head of the Family, Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy (David Everett Moore – whose personal kindness extends beyond his wonderful acting ability); the beautiful and wise Mrs. Elizabeth (Lizzy) Darcy (Melissa Ortiz); the irrepressible new House Maid, Cassie (Neiry Rojo); the sweet, lovely, silly-in-love and gullible, Lydia Wickham (Madeline Rouverol); and George Wickham (Kenny Toll), a drunken brawler, whose reputation as a scoundrel was couched merely in terms of “experience.”
No doubt the actors were easily transported into their characters by the expert Scenic (set) Design of Wilson Chin in the downstairs kitchen – the hub of activity at Pemberley; beautiful carpentry – stairs, tables, cabinetry, high windows/ceiling by Mike Ferrell and Scenic Artists Patrick Tabor and Jenny Yang, with prop artistry by Liam Ruddisil and Rachel Hurado). And the fabulous costumes could only have inspired them to stay in character through all the laughs, fighting, and tears. The costuming crew includes: Designer Courtney Flores; Costume Builder Naomi Arnst; Costume Shop Manager Sarah Smith; Stitchers: Alice Ruiz, Coeli Polansky, Kathleen Lanphier, and Marney Margules. Wigs were provided by Wigboys.
With each background period-music selection and Sound Design (by Sharath Patel), the audience was drawn deeper into the onstage activity, and with each lighting change, the mood was set (Lighting Designer Wen-Ling Liao and Assistant Danny Osburn).
The intricate and extensive electrical operations were performed by Melissa Ramirez, Minerva Ramirez, Ericka Sokolower-Shain, Matt Sykes, and Josh van Eyken. Board Operator was Patrick Mahoney
