Plaid” Serenade is Close to Heavenly

As the story goes, there were these four talented lads who got together and formed a popular musical group. They really had a sound, you know? In February 1964 they found themselves on their way to a date with Destiny.

No, it’s not those four musical lads. But the Beatles did play a role in the untimely demise of The Plaids. The unfortunate, lesser-known quartet collided with a bus full of Fab Four fans on their way to witness the Beatles’ historic debut on the Ed Sullivan Show. The Plaids never made it to their big break, but they did make it to that Big Concert in the sky. We get to see them on the stage of eternity, performing that perfect concert, one more time.

The result is “Forever Plaid”, an excuse to indulge in the close-harmony pop songs of the late 1950s and early 60s, much in the same spirit as “The Marvelous Wonderettes”, a mega-hit for 6th Street a few seasons back. Written by Stuart Ross, “Plaid” was first performed off-Broadway in 1989 and went on to worldwide success. For those who remember them, some of the numbers include “Three Coins in the Fountain”, “Love is a Many-Splendored Thing” and “Chain Gang”, to name a few.

It’s basically wall-to-wall music with well-executed vocals, for the most part, interspersed with musings about what may have been, regrets, life, and love. Local talents Jake Druzgala, Joseph Favalora, Trevor Sakai-Jolivette and Erik Weiss deliver moments of splendid four-part harmony, especially during the finale. Sharp stage direction by Patrick Nims and musical direction by Nathan Riebli keep this sweetly nostalgic show lively and thoroughly entertaining.
