Mexico Eco-Adventure: Enjoy Laguna Sontecomapan in Veracruz

Mexico Sunrise photo by Scott ValorTake a break from the five-star hotels and enjoy an eco-adventure in the Los Tuxtlas Biosphere Reserve in the Mexican State of Veracruz.  Starting with the volcanic mountain range, the coastal portion of Los Tuxtlas features the pristine Laguna Sontecomapan with its thriving mangroves and clear brackish water ultimately flowing into the Gulf of Mexico.  The Laguna Sontecomapan is considered a wetland of international importance.

The full experience starts with the flight into the city of Veracruz.  Spend the night in one of many three- to five-star hotels getting ready for the journey.  Wake up early and take a taxi or chartered van a couple of scenic hours south to the town of Sontecomapan.  Step into a small, but comfortable local boat and begin the cruise to your destination: Rancho Los Amigos.  Accessible only by boat, Rancho Los Amigos offers comfortable, rustic lodging on the banks of Laguna Sontecomapan.  There you can enjoy kayaking, stand up paddling, fishing, swimming, and hiking.  All food is locally prepared and grown on the land.  Bird watching tours, a turtle hatchery, and rainforest restoration demonstrations are all steps away or a short boat ride.  Yoga sessions are also available.
