Ariana Savalas – The Menage a Tour

Ariana Savalas- The Ménage a Tour
SF Oasis, San Francisco, CA, September 6, 2017

Ariana Savalas is the queen of post-modern jukebox – mashups of vintage pop material that combine elements of burlesque, swing era sophistication, bawdiness and sexy decadence. The singer, songwriter, actress, multi-instrumentalist and comedienne combines all these talents into her fabulous show Ménage a Tour which touched down in San Francisco’s south of market treasure SF Oasis.

Backed by longtime collaborator and co-songwriter Mark Vogel on piano/vocals and drummer Joe Martone, Ariana changed styles and eras as quickly as she did costumes. The opening number “Pretty Woman” displayed the mashup style, incorporating a few bars of “putting on the Ritz” and “So Long Farewell” from The Sound of Music. With her extremely talented go-go boys Blake McIver (choreography, director) and Louis Williams, Savalas presents full blown tableaus with dance, costumes, excellent harmonies and plenty of burlesque shtick. Original tunes (Savalas/Vogel) included; the bawdy “Big Ben”, a double -entendre for a more than ample British lover, “Miss Congeniality”, smiling through the pain of being a runner-up, and “Playboy Bunny”, a wickedly funny tale feminist tale of being taken seriously as an artist, while dressed in a slinky bunny costume.

Savalas was classically trained, attending the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. She later joined Playhouse West, a repertory theatre company founded by Jeff Goldblum. Her videos recorded with Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox have been seen by over 100 million people. Her voice is clear and vibrant with great tones and range. Like her peers Morgan James, Haley Reinhart and Casey Abrams, Savalas is enhancing the revival of boogie-woogie, early cabaret and big band swing. Adding theatre, camp and original music elevates Savalas into the realm of a modern-day Bette Midler. She’s got talent, creativity and energy to spare. The LGBTQ community better get on board with Ariana Savalas fast- you don’t wanna jump on her bandwagon to late!
