Theater Review: ‘Moll Flanders’ at Ross Valley Players, Ross, Ca.
Director Ellen Brooks, ably aided by her own lighting design, some clever projections and an equally clever set design referencing ship’s sails by RVP stalwart Ron Krempetz, propels her dozen actors, almost all of whom play multiple roles, through a frantic production of Daniel Defoe’s literary mayhem, ‘Incidents in the Wicked Life of Moll Flanders’, indeed this production is as sprawling as is Moll’s own story, from rebellious convicted felon in London’s Newgate Prison in the early 1700’s to the New World, all the while trading on her beauty and wit.
Adapted for the stage by playwright Jennifer Le Blanc, this show is a whirlwind of action, entrances, exits and general commotion and chaos, featuring the talented and statuesque Amber Collins Crane in the seemingly exhausting title role.
Relaxing comfortably in one of RVP’s newly installed plush seats, one feels somewhat abashed as the deliriously madcap action swirls.
‘Moll Flanders’, both the play and the character, is frenzied, wild, passionate, emotional,
hysterical and one heck of a lot of fun!
It’s summer, the perfect time to get up off the couch and get over to Ross’ RVP, to support both local actors and local theater…
