Holiday “Big Band Bash 2018”

In take off on a Lawrence Welk floor shows of the 1950s, JB Presents “Holiday Big Band Bash 2018” that took place December 9 in San Francisco’s historic Great American Music Hall on O’Farrell Street.  The audience was invited to sing and dance along with the dozens of cast members and the 13 piece  band.  Director and producer John Biscegiie and his JP Presents brought a delicious program for the third year. Thanks to word of mouth the show was again all sold-out. Biscegiie is a great party  and show organizer and everyone had lots of fun.

Biscegiie is a free-lance promoter, producer and even a singer in this show as one of the long line of soloists singing favorites from the 50’s in a variety show format,   The show channelled those of the great band leader Lawrence Welk whose show was a favorite on T.V.  from which Welk reached many an American living room.  The songs Bisceglie chose came from the Great American Songbook and the holiday evening was also sprinkled with Xmas favorites. Micheal Young led the Mood Swing Orchestra,  a live 13 piece band with an excellent collection of musicians with no less than 4 saxophones plus other instruments.  They played almost all the three hours (6-9 p.m.) taking only two short breaks in between three sets of music.  People could not help but stand up and dance on the large floor in front of the stage.  At times the corps of singers and dancers created chorus lines or ensembles.  They are all seasoned actors and performers from the Bay Area stages.

Biscegiie captured the feeling of the golden era of the 50s when beloved songs were sing-able and dance-able and familiar to all. Old favorites , 43 songs coming one after another, were often sung by soloists who once they were finished introduced the next singer.  The band also played songs without singers and the audience danced to the likes of “Begin the Beguine”,“Moonlight Serenade” and others. The dance-floor was always filled with patrons of all ages. The evening ended with a lovely version of “White Christmas” and people left with a smile on their faces.

JBPresents plans two more programs coming up.  On April 6 he produces “Classic Cole Porter” at 6 p.m. at Marines’ Memorial Theater and on July 7 there will be another “Big Band Bash”,  this time titled ”Night at the the USO”, Sunday, July 7th, 6-9pm. Great American Music Hall with songs from WWII.  Think Andrew Sisters here.Tickets for both events will be available in January at https://www.jbpresents.org

Biscegiie is great showman who knows how to produce a very successful party where everyone participates in singing and dancing. His works are always joyous affairs.  I first saw JB Presents do “Sondheim! A Choral Celebration” and it was terrific.  Biscegiie is well-known in the Bay Area where he has worked with community and professional shows.  Follow him at
