The San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus under the direction of Dr. Timothy Seelig presented on December 8 and 9 at Nourse Theatre an “Elfstravaganza”. Subtitled “making the North Pole gay again. All 300 men impressively singing filled the theatre with holiday cheer.
For nearly forty years, the San Francisco Gay Men’s has been entertaining the audience all over the United States. They recently returned from the tour of the south where they were received terrific notices.
The first act contains standard Christmas songs like “Deck the Hall” “Joy to the World” “Three Kings” and “Silent Night” . Little known songs is the first act were “Love Came Down at Christmas with Andrew Caldwell pitch perfect voice along the 300 men chorus and “Puttin on the Holiday Drag” with Jonathan Jones belting out. The last song before the intermission was a “Andrew Lippa/Steven Huffine plaintive “Christmas Eve in the Castro” with golden vocal cords of Alvaro Vargas and Drew Haven
The second act was more camper with The Lollipop Guild. They certainly made North Pole gay again. The second act started Homophonics were enchanting “12 Days of Christmas”. The 300 Men were outfitted in elf costumes as they sang “An Elf’s Life” and segue into “Nobody Cares About Santa” from the Broadway musical “Elf” with belting out Eric Carlson.
Katya Smirnoff-Skyy took center stage looking a million and done some wicked banter in “Opera Takes a Holiday” There a little playlet with Keith Bryon as Ruldopho, Katya as Mrs. Claus and Derek Blechinger as Santa. It was hilarious. A highlight was John Rox’s “I Want a Lumbersexueal for Christmas” with Gary Mendelson Varela backed by 300 men chorus followed by “Kay Thompson’s Jingle Bells” in turn “Wayne Kirkpatrick/Michael W. Smith beautiful “All Is Well” ending with “Disco Santa Clause”
Bottom Line” It is a night of excellent singing
