A Grand Night of Singing with Music and Lyrics of Frank Loesser

May 6th was a grand night of singing when four “monies” Bill Fahrner, Ashley Jarrett, Ian Leonard and Ashley Rae Little and two guest stars Tony nominee Emily Skinner and Jason Graae sang songs from eclectic composer and lyrists Frank Loesser who wrote such Broadway hits as “Guys and Dolls”, “Where’s Charlie”, “The Most Happy Fella” and “How to Succeed in Business Without Even Trying”.   All this occurred at the Eureka Theatre in a revue called “Once In Love with Loesser”.

Greg MacKellan, co-artistic director told the audience at the beginning of this fast and smooth pace revue that there would be songs not  only from this wide-ranging composer Broadway shows but songs he wrote for the silver screen. Some of the songs have become standards such as “Two Sleepy People” which he composed the lyrics to Hoagy Carmichael melody or “Baby It’s Cold Outside” from MGM’s “Neptune Daughter”.  There were even little known songs from his “movie composing” such as “The Moon of Manakoora” with music by Alfred Newman for the film “The Hurricane”.  All of these song were sung vibrantly by the four “moonies” and the two guest stars. Emily Skinner has great thematic resonance singing “On a Slow Boat to China” from “Neptune’s Daughter” and the pop song “What are You Doing New Years Eve”.

The second act featured Frank Loesser’s Broadway shows.  Jason Graae with his vibrant voice wowed the crowd with “Once In Love with Amy” from “Where’s Charley?” and was effervescent singing “The King’s New Clothes” from “Hans Christian Anderson”. Emily Skinner belted out “Ooh! My Feet” from “Hans Christian Anderson”. The whole cast ended this great night of songs with “Brotherhood of Man” from “How to Succeed”.

“Once in Love with Loesser” was a 42nd Street Moon Production under their Salon Series and it played at the Eureka Theatre on May 6th and 7th.
