Karen Mason and Will Nunziata Guest Stars in Russ Lorenson Annual Christmas Show
Every year during this holiday season crooner Russ Lorenson headlines Christmas in San Francisco with Russ Lorenson and Friends. The 7th annual Christmas show that occurred on December 5th at the Rrazz Room got everyone into the holiday mood with great holiday songs performed by Russ Lorenson, Broadway star Karen Mason, song stylist Will Nunziata of Anthony and Will Numziata backed by the Kelly Park Quartet with Kent Bryson on drums, Tony Peddles on sax, Daniel Fabricant on bass and Kelly Park on piano. Russ’s voice is very evocative of those singers that I used to enjoy when I went to the 52nd Street cabarets in New York.
Russ Lorenson opened the show with the up-tempo novelty song “If I Hear Another Song About Christmas” and then segued into an Andy William’s medley. His voice shined in a smooth arrangement of “Let Me Be the First One to Wish you Merry Christmas”. He concluded his segment with the bluesy ballad “Mrs. Claus.
Russ then introduced Broadway legend Karen Mason to the stage. They were harmoniously stimulating singing “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm” and “Winter Wonderland”. Russ left the stage and the diva performed her songs with an old-fashioned Broadway style theatrically. She was laid back and broke the fourth wall between her and the sold out crowd camping it up with pianist Kelly Park who told her fans she presented him with a nine page full of arrangements. He proceeded to throw away the huge long sheet of paper. Karen belted out “We Need a Little Christmas” from “Mame” and then showed off her smooth voice cords in “Christmas Waltz” seguing into “Christmas Song”. She was droll singing the novelty song “Not This Christmas” where she sang things that she did not want including anything from the musical “Rebecca” The diva was sublime singing “Silent Night” and then changing tempo to “Santa Clause is Coming to Town” ending her segment with a great arrangement of “It’s About Time” . Russ reentered the stage and both harmonic energizing singing “Let It Snow”
Russ Lorenson introduced Will Numziata of Anthony and Will Numziata who were appearing on December 8th in “Christmas in Italy”. Will was pitch perfect singing “White Christmas”. He reminded me of a young Sinatra. Russ completed the show with “Silver Bells”, “I Guess There Ain’t No Santa Claus”, “I’ll be Home for Christmas” and “Thankful”. Karen Mason came back to the stage to sing with Russ a beautiful arrangement of “That Holiday Feeling”. For an encore Russ sang “Christmas in San Francisco”.
